On July 15, 1889 the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Local Union 109 was chartered in Omaha Nebraska. Local Union 109 had spin off locals of Drywall Finishers LU 1948, Glaziers LU 573, Soft Tile carpet and Linoleum installers LU 1128, and Sign Writers LU 752. Local Union 109 covers the state of Nebraska and Southwest Iowa. Local Union 109 has been recognized on an international level with members being elected to Regional Vice President G.A. Lang (1892-1894) and A.C Smith (1905-1908).
In recent years our local union was one of nine local unions that came together to form The international Union and Allied Trades District 81. Local Union 109 has been recognized in the community as an asset by winning awards like “The Patriotic Employer Award” for work done by our members for other members while they were deployed to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Local 109 was the third recipient in the Omaha area. Omaha Steaks and Kiewit Construction were the other two. Local Union 109 also was recognized in the greater Benson area for neighborhood beautification efforts. Local Union 109 also set the world record for fastest time to paint a house in 1940, in four minutes and eight and one half seconds .
