A Note from Randy Schultz, PPME Director:
Yesterday, February 17th (2017), shortly after 3:00 PM, the Iowa Senate voted to approve the House version of the bill designed to gut Chapter 20 - HF 291. The dirty deed has been accomplished. This horrible legislation now awaits the Governor's signature. He will sign it. This measure was supported by Republicans and opposed by Democrats. The advertising that you may have seen supporting the change was funded in part by the Koch Bros. and advocated by groups such as Americans for Prosperity. It will have a profound effect upon all PPME contracts.
As I walked away from the Capitol yesterday following the final vote, I reflected upon the magnitude of the change brought about by this demeaning assualt on public employees and how it will negatively impact our membership. I thought about my friends in various bargaining units scattered across the State who have worked along side me settling difficult contract matters. I thought about the other Business Reps who currently serve you and those who have come and gone throughout the 43 years since Chapter 20's inception; Those who have had a part in crafting and maintaining the contract provisions that provide continuity to your conditions of work. This agenda is bigger than Iowa. I was sad to have witnessed this crime against organized labor, knowing full well that it affects private sector union members as well. I also wondered how many of our members reached out to their legislators as we requested. You can still make a difference. Hold them accountable. Attend a legislative forum in your area.
